How to Pay Safely with Mobile Money When Buying Online in Ghana

By Kurom Team · 9 October 2026

Mobile Money (MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money) is the easiest way to pay for things you find online in Ghana. It is also the most common way buyers lose money to fake sellers, because a MoMo transfer to a stranger is very hard to reverse. These habits keep your money safe.

1. Do not send money before you have seen the item

The safest way to buy from an individual seller is to meet in a busy public place, inspect the item, and pay there. A seller who insists on a deposit, "delivery fee" or "reservation fee" before you have seen anything is the most common scam pattern. Walk away.

2. Check the name before you confirm

When you send MoMo, the network shows the registered name of the number before you confirm. Make sure it matches the seller you have been talking to. If the name is different from the one on the listing or in the chat, stop and ask why.

3. Keep the conversation on Kurom

Scammers often move buyers to WhatsApp or SMS quickly so there is no record on the marketplace. Keep chatting in Kurom: if something goes wrong, the Kurom team can see the conversation and act on the account.

4. Use Kurom checkout for shop items

Items from Kurom shops with an Add to cart button can be paid for with Mobile Money or card through Kurom checkout. Kurom holds the payment and only pays the shop after your order is delivered, so if it never arrives or is not as described, the team can step in.

5. Never share your MoMo PIN or approval codes

No real seller, network agent or Kurom staff will ask for your PIN, a verification code, or ask you to "approve" a payment prompt you did not start. If you get a prompt you did not expect, decline it.

6. Know the warning signs

A price far below what similar items sell for (compare on Kurom price guides).

Pressure to pay quickly because "someone else is coming".

A seller who cannot meet, video call or show the item in a fresh photo.

Requests to pay a different number from the one you agreed on.

If you think you have been scammed

Call your network's customer service immediately and ask them to block the transaction, report the seller on Kurom with the Report button, and contact the Kurom team with the listing link and the MoMo transaction ID.
